canoes in the dusk

splintering sea – deep

troughs of sunset waves – shade, swell,

breathing dreams of sleep

*

lost in waking waves –

our canoes launch liquid lives

in limitless dusk.

  1. James Wood says

    This is an enigmatic haiku chain. Canoes as splinters on the skin or surface of the sea, both causing and slipping through troughs of the ocean’s breathing, sleeping, dreaming. The wake of the waves, – a projection forward into waking from sleep, perhaps because pricked by the splinters? – as the canoes launch liquid lives into a dusk that doesn’t end.

    It should be noted that dusk is only limitless if you are ceaselessly following the course of the setting sun.

    Hence the need for a canoe.
    And one explanation for the description of the launched lives as “liquid”.

    “dreams of sleep”//“lost in waking waves”

    The enjambment across the line break (or rather, from the first haiku to the second) exemplifies the motion expressed in the words, the dreams of sleeping sea rocked by the waves.

    “waking” :

    – The wake made by the motion of the canoes through ocean;
    – Waking from sleep;
    – The wake held by waves in mourning.

    @James, you refer to the first two, but not to the third.
